“Giorgio Vasari between Venice and Arezzo. "Hope" and other stories from the ceiling of the Corner-Spinelli Palace”

From 8 June to 9 September 2018 the Casa Vasari Museum (Polo Museale della Toscana), in collaboration with the Gallerie dell’Accademia Museum in Venice, houses the exhibition Giorgio Vasari between Venice and Arezzo. "Hope" and other stories from the ceiling of Corner-Spinelli Palace, an extraordinary opportunity to show to the public the Allegory of Hope, displayed here for the first time. It is one of the sections of the ceiling, painted by Vasari in 1542 in Venice, and then gone missing. The section was made up of the board with the Hope figure - recently purchased by the Italian State with the contribution of Venetian Heritage and Venice in Peril Fund for the Gallerie dell’Accademia Museum in Venice and now finally restored - and of Judas'suicide, belonging to Casa Vasari Museum in Arezzo since 1980. The compartment, permanently reassembled, is an important tile in the reconstruction of the Venetian ceiling it comes from, as recognized by recent studies.

There is a strong connection between the rejoined work and its author, the painter and architect from Arezzo Giorgio Vasari. As a matter of fact, the Corner-Spinelli ceiling is very similar in type and style to the other painted ceilings in Vasari's home, which were designed and built only six years after his remarkable stay in the Lagoon.

The exhibition, while celebrating the reconstruction of the Allegory of Hope and its awaited public display, reconstructs the troubled events of the entire Corner-Spinelli ceiling, through an integrated didactic installation with a fascinating video that lets visitors appreciate its complex iconography.
